The West Bend Power and Wausau Cyclones weekend series at Kettle Moraine Ice Center could not have been much closer or more evenly matched. Each team came away with 3 points after a 6-5 overtime Cyclone win on Friday and a 3-2 overtime win for the home team on Saturday. Both teams had 31 shots on goal on Friday and shots were tied at the end of regulation Saturday at 31 each.
Friday the Power got out to the early lead when Jackson Hoem scored his 8th goal of the season at 12:54 off assists from Monte Goold (4) and Odin Klebba (4). Michael Mallette scored his first goal as a Power at 8:42, the first of his 3-goal hat trick on the night. Mallette was assisted by Jackson Hoem (7) and Brody Josselyn (3). John Kriz answered at 8:20 to cut the lead in half until Hayden Vonk added his first Power goal at 1:03 off assists from Teagan Scheurer (6) and Blake Mitchell (3) for a 3-1 lead after one period of play. John Kriz scored his second of the night at 13:16 of the second period. Michael Mallette matched it with his second of the night at 11:44 of assists from Sam Harper (2) and Tommy Kundinger (2). Brady Knutsen scored for the Cyclones at 4:19 bringing the score to 4-3 after two periods. John Kirz and Connor Dvorak put the visitors ahead with goals at 6:42 and 4:01 but Michael Mallette scored his third goal of the night with just 0.9 left on the clock to send the game to overtime. After a lengthy delay for rink maintenance, it took just 31 seconds for Wausau to score and take game one on the weekend.
Saturday it was Wausau who got on the board first off a Connor Dvorak goal at 5:16 for the only scoring in the period. Brody Josselyn scored his first goal of the season at 8:33 of the second period off assists from Hayden Vonk (1) and Lucca Weinkauf (3) to tie it at 1-1. Tommy Kundinger gave the Power the lead, scoring his 3rd goal of the season from long range at 6:06 off assists from Odin Klebba (5) and Teagan Scheurer (8). The third period remained scoreless until 1:06 when Micah Saxon was able to get one past Power netminder Ben Glasemen to tie it up and send it to a second overtime in as many days. The Power took control in the overtime period, outshooting the Cyclones 7-1 but the highlight of the weekend came with 1:12 remaining when Jackson Hoem took the puck around the back of net and lifted in the “Michigan” past Wausau goaltender Derek Namlick for the overtime victory. Hoem was assisted by Jace Fitzgerald (10) and Hayden Vonk (2).
The Palermo’s Screamin Sicilian three stars of the game were: third star Tommy Kundinger, second star Ben Glaseman and first star Jackson Hoem. The Versi-foam hard hat hardest worker of the game was Brody Josselyn. The Culligan Water of West Bend players of the weekend are Jackson Hoem and Michael Mallette.
